The Scaries of Synthetic Fragrances

You reach for the natural, eco-conscious labels because you care. You’re exercising your own consumer power to choose brands that have diverged themselves from mainstream practices that expose their buyers to avoidable toxins.

But how does this choice apply to candles…and why does it matter?

When you light a candle, you’re initiating a combustion reaction. The heat of the flame vaporizes the wax into a gas, and the candle remains ignited for as long as its fuel is available. For scented candles, the aromatic agents in the vaporizing wax are what you can smell. The usual suspects are released: carbon dioxide and water vapor, but the composition of the wax dictates which other molecules join them.

Meanwhile, the presumed candle-lighter (and whoever else is in the space) is breathing in this chemical concoction.

It pays off to be conscious of what you’re buying, so you can know what you’re breathing.

Witch candle is worse?

Both cost-effective and widely available, petroleum-derived paraffin wax is a common base for candles manufactured by large companies that are producing their candles on a massive scale. It boasts a high-melting point, an impressive scent-throw, and is easy to physically manipulate.

Yet its attributes come at a cost. The paraffin combustion reaction releases benzene (a known-carcinogen with long-term exposure), toluene (a volatile organic compound that has been linked to respiratory issues, headaches, and dizziness with prolonged exposure), and formaldehyde.

The wax may also be infused with synthetic fragrances, which are made from a mixture of chemicals including phthalates. Intended to increase the duration and power of the scent, phthalates are also endocrine disruptors, meaning they can interfere with hormone function. Long-term exposure to phthalates has been linked to reproductive issues, asthma, and developmental problems.

Synthetic dyes, meant to make the candle colors really “scream,” are also an amalgam of chemicals with troubling potential long-term effects.

That was the bad…here’s the Good.

You don’t have to compromise your air quality to enjoy the glow of a candle.
Our special formulation cuts out all the scary stuff, so you can breathe in the Good stuff that gives GoodLight our namesake.

Instead of paraffin wax, we use palm oil wax. This not only makes our candles entirely plant-derived, with a renewable resource, but their high melting point means they burn longer than paraffin wax.

And, of course, they burn clean. In contrast to their paraffin counterparts, our palm oil wax candles burn with minimal soot and toxic chemical emissions. The aromas of all GoodLight’s scented candles are rendered entirely from essential oils and plant-based isolates, making them 100% natural.
